Indoor and Outdoor National Championships
Evans Head, New South Wales
23-24th May 2015
It is with great pleasure that I write this note reflecting on the 2015 Australian Tug of War Association
National Titles.
The competition was hosted by the wonderful community of Evans Head on the North Coast of New South
Wales over the weekend 23 & 24 May 2015 and I would like to thank the Beef meets Reef Festival organizing
committee, the Evans Head/Woodburn RSL Club and all the sponsors for the effort they put into making the
event a great success. ATOWA looks forward to hosting many future regional, State and Australian Titles at
this great location.
2015 saw an increase in both the number of Clubs pulling and the quality of the pulling. The stalwart Clubs
Brisbane Bulldogs, Glen Innes Jellybeans and Maitland were joined by new Brisbane side Na Fianna and
returning former champions Woolgoolga and Korumburra. To have 6 Clubs competing at Nationals level again
is a real boon for the sport and it is great to see a mixture of old faces and keen youth in the new and retuning
Clubs.
With increased puller participation comes an increased workload for time keepers and Judges alike and I
thank them all for their dedication and professionalism.
With 5 gold medals the Woolgoolga side proved the strongest team and, as hosts of the 2016 National Titles,
will certainly mount a vigorous defence of their trophies. I look forward to travelling to Woolgoolga next year
for what will surely be an even higher level of competition. With the introduction of a men’s 600kg class and a
second mixed division I am certain that Clubs will be out in their local communities actively recruiting over the
coming year.
With the 2018 Outdoor World titles being held in South Africa and Tug of war vying for inclusion in the 2020
Olympics now is the time for all of us to keep up the momentum and spread the word about this great sport.
Yours in TOW,
Ben Hoffman
President
